Kid’s Book Review: I Can Do It By Myself

About the Book and Author / Illustrator

A brilliantly funny celebration of learning how to do things by yourself for the first time, whether it’s getting dressed, or learning to write, or sitting still…
and no, we don’t need any help, thank you very much!
I can do it by myself I can show you how I know I’ll do it properly I WANT to do it NOW!
For all those children who KNOW they can do it all by themselves… and the adults who try to help them!

Caryl Hart Author

Caryl Hart started writing for children when I was 32 years old, after her first  daughter was born and, after a lot of work, my first book was published 10 years later, in 2009.

She’s had over 55 children’s books published including baby books, picture books, young fiction and non-fiction stories. Her goal is to write at least one hundred books in her lifetime.

When she’s not thinking up rhymes, writing stories or creating characters, she runs creative workshops in schools, libraries and for festivals. She also works with companies, charities, universities and other organisations on creative projects, editing and literacy training.

Book Review

it's silly and funny together!

Ilaria really enjoys this book and we take a long time reading it every time because Ilaria likes to work out all the ways the characters are actually not managing to do things by themselves!

Ilaria also loves commenting on all the adults’ facial expressions and working out how they all felt about the children’s behaviours and why. It is m very funny as a parent to read it with a little girl who also likes to do everything by herself but who doesn’t recognise the similarities between herself and the characters. Ilaria described the book as ‘silly and funny together’.

Ilaria particularly liked the pages when the girl was going fast on her scooter because she felt the baby was enjoying the ride, and the page when the boy was going round in a kings costume because he was in his underwear. Ilaria found this book very comical and I would recommend it to anyone who has children who are asserting their independence as it is amusing on a number of levels.
