Kid’s Book Review: Creeping Beauty – Fairytales Gone Bad

Kid’s Book Review: Creeping Beauty – Fairytales Gone Bad

About the Book and Poet

Following on from Zombierella and Frankenstiltskin, this is the third and final book in a deliciously dark trilogy of twisted classics, written in verse by award-winning poet Joseph Coelho, illustrated by Freya Hartas and published by Walker Books. We posted it to Violet and within a day of her receiving it she had read it and emailed us back her glowing review.

If you don’t like your fairytales too sugar-coated you will enjoy reading this!

Freya Hartas is a UK based illustrator specialising in children’s books. She lives in the vibrant city of Bristol with her partner and their ancient black cat Katsu and works from her cosy, cluttered desk in a shared studio down the road . She graduated from Falmouth University with a first class honours in BA Illustration in 2014. Freya loves to conjure up humorous characters, animals and monsters, creating the most fantastical worlds for them to inhabit and get lost in. She has worked on picture books and a number of classic chapter book illustrations for older children.

Book Review

I particularly enjoyed the rhyming spells

The story is very easy to get into. I easily read it in one go- it was hard to put down. On the first page there’s a little library card which is cool. The illustrations added humour to the story, especially the troll. It’s loosely based on Sleeping Beauty but it’s very funny and takes you on a roller coaster. The chapter titles were funny too. I particularly enjoyed the rhyming spells.

The main character goes on a developmental journey, she’s my favourite- she’s independent, likeable and always tries to put things right when she messes up. I would recommend this for 6-10 year olds but anyone can enjoy it.

I have never read anything by Joseph Coelho before but I would definitely read other books in this series and by him.
