Kid’s Book Review: Discovering Life’s Story

About the Book and Author

In this fascinating book you journey back through time to biology’s beginnings…

Observe the inquisitive scholars of Ancient Greece and the Islamic Golden Age as they began to ask questions about how the human body works; journey to the Renaissance where Leonardo da Vinci was dissecting cadavers to uncover human anatomy; and stop in the late 1800s, where a baffled Dutch biologist found a tiny infectious particle destroying tobacco crops, which he named virus.

Joy Hakim is an American academic, an experienced teacher, a former journalist and published writer of several books including the acclaimed ‘A History of Us’ series.

Book Review

there are lots of stunning graphics and pictures in all colours throughout the pages

This book is about the history of biology. It informs the reader about the Islamic World and other interesting facts. It also refers to famous people such as Galileo Galilei, Francis Bacon and other intriguing people. Additionally, there are quotes in every chapter from well-known experts.

I liked how the book was presented and the style of it. It has a very eye-catching book cover and there are lots of stunning graphics and pictures in all colours throughout the pages. The quotes are very interesting, especially William Shakespeare’s “What’s In A Name? A Rose By Any Name Would Smell As Sweet”. I really enjoyed the chapter ’A big time adventurer and a quiet scholar’ because it tells us about different historical figures, what they did and what they discovered. It was good because it felt like this book took me throughout the ages, it makes me feel as if I were in a museum.

The only thing I was not keen on was the complexity of some of the terms. I think simplifying some of the words would help to make it an easier read. I recommend this book to people who are interested in biology because it provides a lot of details and the history about it. This book will be a great addition to your bookshelf. I would rate this book 9 out of 10 because the pictures are amazing and the quotes are interesting despite the fact that some of the words could be simplified. I’m sure you will enjoy this book no matter what age you are, even adults can enjoy it!
