About the Book

This is a graphic novel set in the Second World War.

Paul Colbert’s French village has been under Nazi control for years. His Jewish best friend has disappeared. Food is scarce. And there doesn’t seem to be anything Paul can do to make things better.

Then Paul finds an American paratrooper stuck in a tree. When Paul helps the soldier, he discovers a secret resistance movement – and he learns the Allies have a plan to crush the Nazis. The Resistance ask for his help and Paul finds himself in the midst of the largest invasion in history.

Book Review

I liked the way it mixed real history with a fictional story

I would summarise this book as a dark graphic novel that tells the story of D Day through the eyes of a child in France.
The novel is set out in clear boxes, usually only 4 or 5 per page, this made it very easy to read, in fact I read it in one sitting.

The colours used in the illustrations are very dark or sepia looking which works well for me as someone who is colour blind and having all the text on a stark white background made it very accessible for me.
I liked the way it mixed real history with a fictional story, it kept me interested in a way just reading facts doesn’t.
I enjoyed this and am looking at reading the others in the series. I would recommend this for anyone aged 9+.
