About the Book, Author and Illustrator
The lion is king and everyone in his kingdom is happy except the lion, who feels lonely because everyone is afraid of him and no one tries to make friends.
Until a brave little girl sees the king and roars back!
They became friends because she really understands him and knows what it’s like to be lonely too
King Lion was lonely and he just wants some friends but nobody understands him because he’s roaring at everybody and it makes them all scared. It was really sad because he was alone for a long time and everybody just saw his claws and jaws, they couldn’t see inside him and know his feelings. Then the little girl tried to understand him by making a plan and investigating everything about the lion, what he likes and what he wants.
It was funny when she met him and roared back at home and asked him to be friends. She was very brave because he could’ve just eaten or hurt her. They became friends because she really understands him and knows what it’s like to be lonely too, and now they aren’t alone. My favourite page was when they were roaring at each other.
Mum says: The palette used by the author/illustrator convey the lion’s feelings and emotions and this is reflected in the dark and gloomy and then bright and cheerful pages. This has been a great book to springboard discussions on emotions and loneliness.
