Kid’s Book Review: Saturday is Pancake Day

Kid’s Book Review: Saturday is Pancake Day

About the Book and Author / Illustrator

This story is about the fun and chaos the fox family enjoy sharing in the kitchen on a Saturday. This fox family has two dads.

Perfect for Father’s Day it is a celebration of the happy memories that can be made together from perfectly imperfect culinary connections made by arguably  ‘too many cooks’!

Bernadette Green grew up loving animals and being outside. She was no happier than when she was high up in a tree or riding her horse, Blue. As a teenager she dreamed of becoming a writer, but life took her on different adventures. She was a mushroom picker for many years before studying to be a youth worker and then a writer. Bernadette now juggles writing and working as a disability support worker.

Daniel Gray-Barnett is an award-winning illustrator and author who lives in Tasmania.

Book Review

the illustrations are lovely

Ilaria enjoyed this book, particularly the lovely illustrations. The story is a simple one which makes it effective, I feel. The same sex couple involved in an everyday story was really nice to read as it is important that diverse families are represented in all aspects of family life. The relationship the dad making the food had with his children and the dad who was in bed was also quite heart-warming and well written.

The only thing about the book that I found a bit tricky when reading it to my 3 year old was the frequent alliteration. For us,  it was a bit much and detracted somewhat from the reading. (I concede it might work better when read with a slightly older child.)

Overall, this is a nice story and a good addition to my lgbtq+ children’s books collection.
