This lovely picture book by Steve Small celebrates the father/child relationship.
Wellington is desperate to be bigger, taller and older but in this story he learns that he’s growing up exactly as quickly as he should be – just as his dad did.
Steve Small is a designer and illustrator and part of a team of animation directors at StudioAKA.
He is illustrator of the highly acclaimed, I’m Sticking with You by Smriti Halls (shortlisted for Oscar’s Book Prize 2021 and for Children’s Illustrated Book of the Year at the British Book Awards 2021) and the author and illustrator of The Duck Who Didn’t Like Water.
Steve’s always been hooked on books and loves the simple storytelling chemistry at work in picture books.
In his words “They don’t move and they don’t make a sound, yet they remain one of the finest ways to smuggle a story into our imagination.”

the pictures are colourful and beautiful
Orla really enjoyed sharing this story with her Dad. She enjoyed learning about what a tailor was as she hadn’t heard of this before.
Orla liked that it was Wellingtons birthday as she was going to a friend’s birthday later in the day. She spent lots of time looking at the illustrations as ‘they are colourful and beautiful’.
Orla said she liked that the animals were wearing clothes like she does.
Her favourite part of the story was when Wellington got his ice skates from Grandad as they were just right for him and he had fun on his birthday.
Orla said she would recommend this sorry for her friends to read.
