Kid’s Book Review: Who’s Your Real Mum?

Kid’s Book Review: Who’s Your Real Mum?

About the Book and Author / Illustrator

This intricately illustrated picture book by an Australian author and illustrator, published by Scribe, is about a little girl called Elvi who has two mums.

One day a playmate asked her who her ‘real’ mummy is and she explains.

In a lighthearted way children will see a non-traditional family represented on the page and recognise that love for their child is the most important attribute a parent can have.

Bernadette Green grew up loving animals and being outside. She was no happier than when she was high up in a tree or riding her horse, Blue. As a teenager she dreamed of becoming a writer, but life took her on different adventures. She was a mushroom picker for many years before studying to be a youth worker and then a writer. Bernadette now juggles writing and working as a disability support worker.

Anna Zobel is an illustrator who qualified as a primary school teacher. She has taught writing and illustrating workshops for schools, organisations, and adult learning programmes.

Book Review

As someone who has a child in an LGBT family I am pleased that books like this are out there

This is a lovely way of exploring what makes a ‘real’ parent; care and relationship rather than biology. Elvi has great ways of responding to Nicholas’s question ‘who is your real mum’ and through her answers the relationship between Elvi and her mums is really nicely explored.

Ilaria liked the extreme stories Elvi comes up with in response to Nicholas’s question. Her favourite was the fact that Elvi’s mum can cartwheel up a mountain. The end of the story is particularly sweet and the photographs that demonstrate the loving family Elvi has are lovely.

Only aged three years, I don’t think Ilaria completely understood the point of the story but she enjoyed listening to it and seeing what Elvi’s relationship is like with her parents.

As someone who has a child in an LGBT family I am pleased that books like this are out there, hopefully this will help Ilaria if anyone ever asks who her ‘real’ dad is.
