Kid’s Book Review: The No-Girlfriend Rule

Kid’s Book Review: The No-Girlfriend Rule

About the Book and Author

Seventeen-year-old Hollis Beckwith is on a quest to conquer the world of tabletop gaming. But her boyfriend’s ‘No Girlfriends at the Table’ rule means that Hollis will have to find her own group if she wants to join in.

Enter Gloria Castañeda and her all-girls game of S&S! Crowded at the table in Gloria’s apartment, Hollis finds unexpected friendships and epic adventures. With her character as armour, Hollis starts to believe that maybe she can be more than just fat, anxious and a little lost.

When an in-game crush develops between Hollis’s character and the bard played by cool, charismatic Aini Amin Shaw, the lines between the game and reality start to blur-and Hollis is left with a choice: keep pretending, or roll the dice on love.

Christen Randall (she/they) is a queer, fat, neurodiverse author of queer, fat, neurodiverse books.  The No-Girlfriend Rule is her debut novel published by Pushkin Press in the UK.

Book Review

I'm always a sucker for a good YA romance and I LOVED the chemistry!

Yes, yes ,yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, a million times YES. I ADORED this book. Queer romance? Right here. Finding you true self? Right here. A YA romance. RIGHT HERRRRREEEEE!!!! “The no- girlfriend rule” by Christen Randall has it all!

Now, I’ll admit, I was a bit apprehensive during the first chapter. I wasn’t really getting the vibe, you know? BUT, I kept reading, and it was sure worth it! I didn’t really like the whole board game sort of theme but it grew on me. I feel like Hollis, the main character, sort of reminded me of that song, ‘Cinderella’s dead now’ and ‘Cinderella snapped’ because she “broke free” of her boyfriend’s barriers, in a way??

I’m always a sucker for a good YA romance and I LOVED the chemistry!! The way the author made these two characters fall in love and start to like each other was SOOOOOO fun to read!!

Anyway, overall, this was such a good book, especially for those who like a range of genres that all have a similar sort of style! 10/10!!!!
